FOLLOW THE FIVE KEYS TOSPACE CUSHION DRIVING:
1. AIM HIGH IN STEERING - This means look far
ahead and recognize hazards.
2. GET THE BIG PICTURE - This means, seeing
everything around you, from sidewalk to
sidewalk. Look everywhere, watch for the
distance between you and crosswalks. Watch
for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists in front,
behind you and by your sides.
3. KEEP YOUR EYES MOVING - This means, using
your central and/or peripheral vision. You should
have total awareness of your surrounding at all
4. LEAVE YOURSELF AND OUT - This means,
maintain a safe following distance between
you and the car in front of you. Also give
yourself a good space cushion from any car
on your right, left. If you can find the space,
always try not to travel in a cluster of cars.
5. MAKE SURE THEY SEE YOU - This means,
using appropriate vehicle device to make
necessary changes in your driving direction.
Using your horn or lights are important when
warning pedestrians, vehicles or cyclists of
your necessary change or direction. Also,
there are times when folks are not paying
attention and it is necessary to use this rule
DRIVING IS VERY CHALLENGING, HOWEVER, APPLYING THE KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE YOU HAVE LEARNED WILL HELP YOU MASTER MOST OF IT.
FOUL WEATHER DRIVING
ALWAYS ALLOW YOURSELF PLENTY OF TIME TO GET TO YOUR DESTINATION. YOU DON'T WANT TO BE IN A HURRY IN RAIN OR SNOW. TAKE YOUR TIME!!!!! PLAN AHEAD.
LEAVE EXTRA SPACE BETWEEN YOUR VEHICLE AND THE ONE
IN FRONT OF YOU.
TURN YOUR LOW BEAM LIGHTS ON - EVEN DURING THE DAY, IT MAKES YOUR CAR MORE VISIBLE.
GIVE OTHERS PLENTY OF ADVANCE NOTICE WHEN SLOWING DOWN OR TURNING. COMMUNICATE YOUR INTENTIONS EARLY.
ALWAYS ANTICIPATE GIVING FAIR WARNING. HOW? ..BY USING YOUR BRAKE LIGHTS, SIGNAL LIGHTS ETC...WHEN IT RAINS, DURING THE FIRST 15 MINUTES, THE ROADS ARE AT THEIR SLICKEST, DUE TO A THIN FILM OF WATER (OILY SURFACE) WHICH REDUCES THE ABILITY OF YOUR TIRES TO GRIP . THE ROAD BECOMES SLIPPERY AND HEIGHTENS THE POSSIBILITY OF YOUR TIRES SKIDDING OUT OF CONTROL.
WHEN DRIVING IN THE FOG ALWAYS USE YOUR LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS. DEPENDING ON HOW THICK THE FOG, YOU CAN EVEN USE YOUR EMERGENCY FLASHERS TO BE MORE VISIBLE TO OTHERS.
